Virginia Tech is the first university in the nation to offer the internationally recognized Gallup® CliftonStrengths® assessment FREE to all students. It will help you learn about how you work, what you value, where you excel, and who you are becoming.

  • You can take the Gallup® CliftonStrengths® assessment online by logging in with your VT username (PID) and password.
  • The assessment takes about 20 minutes. It is timed and you must complete it uninterrupted.
  • If you need to take the assessment untimed for any reason or if you would like to take it in a different language, use your Virginia Tech email address to email educationhelp@gallup.com BEFORE beginning.
  • If you have questions or need assistance with taking the strengths assessment, email strengths@vt.edu.

Strengths-Based Learning

Traditional psychology has focused on "fixing" an individual’s deficits — concentrating on how to identify and correct perceived weaknesses. Don Clifton, the founder of Strengths-Based Learning, believed that Strengths science answers questions about what's right with people rather than what's wrong with them. Strengths focuses on learning more about our natural gifts and talents, investing time and energy in actively practicing the ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that make us unique.

Frequently Asked Questions

One-on-one coaching appointments

Strengths coaching is designed to help participants:

  • Understand more about your Top 5 Strengths and how you can best use them (such as leadership opportunities, working as part of a team, interviewing for jobs, etc.).
  • Identify examples of how and where your Top 5 show up in your life.

Workshops

VT Strengths Consultants will work with you to design workshops for any student organization or academic class. Our workshops can provide an introduction to the CliftonStrengths® philosophy and participants’ Top 5, and/or focus more specifically on topics like leadership, teamwork, the job search, and more!

Our Strengths Consultants are members of the Virginia Tech community who have committed to learning about Gallup CliftonStrengths® and helping others on campus understand the power of their own Top 5 for individual and collective fulfillment and success.

We open up new Strengths Consultant applications each year. Email strengths@vt.edu for more information about the application process and commitment to the Strengths Consultant program.
