Welcome to the Virginia Tech family!

August tips for families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

Dear Hokie Families,

Welcome to Virginia Tech! I am Mark Sikes, your Dean of Students. It is my pleasure to introduce myself and share our vision for supporting your student's journey at this remarkable institution. Our goal in the Dean of Students area is to create an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment where every student can thrive.

At Virginia Tech, we are committed to fostering meaningful engagement, providing seamless transitions, and offering comprehensive support to ensure that each student feels valued, heard, and equipped for success. From the moment they join our community to the day they graduate, we aim to make their experience fulfilling and enriching.

Upcoming Events: Gobblerfest and More

As part of our efforts to help students connect and engage, we are excited to invite your student to Gobblerfest on Friday, August 30. This vibrant event is a fantastic opportunity for new Hokies to explore student organizations, campus resources, and community groups. Encourage your student to attend Gobblerfest to discover new interests, meet fellow students, and start building their Virginia Tech experience.

In addition to Gobblerfest, we have a variety of events and programs planned to help students transition smoothly into campus life. From orientation sessions to social gatherings, there are numerous ways for your student to get involved and feel at home at Virginia Tech.

Tips to Reduce Stress for Move-In

Moving to a new place can be both exciting and stressful. To help ease this transition, we offer some tips inspired by "Out to Sea: A Parent's Survival Guide to the Freshman Voyage" by Kelly Radi:

  • Plan Ahead: Encourage your student to plan their packing early and create a checklist. This can help avoid last-minute stress and ensure nothing important is left behind.
  • Stay Flexible: Move-in day can be hectic, so it's helpful to stay flexible and patient. Expect delays and be ready to go with the flow.
  • Create a Comfortable Space: Help your student personalize their room to make it a comfortable and inviting space. This can be a great way to make their new environment feel like home.
  • Encourage Independence: While it's natural to want to help with every detail, remember that this is a great time for your student to begin their journey of developing independence. Offer support and guidance and give them time to navigate this new experience.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Remember, this transition is a big step for you, too. Take time to care for yourself, connect with other families, and seek support if needed.

By following these tips, move-in day can be a positive and memorable experience for both you and your student. We are thrilled to welcome you and your student to the Virginia Tech community. Together, we will create a vibrant, supportive, and inclusive campus where every Hokie can succeed and flourish.

All my best,

The Dean of Students Office knows Virginia Tech. Encourage your student to get to know this caring and talented team of mentors and advocates! They can point your student in the right direction, be a sounding board, and assist with personal, social, and academic challenges. They want to get to know your student so they can walk with them along the way and cheer them on in true Hokie fashion!
