Celebrating our journey at Virginia Tech
October tips for families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students
Dear Hokie Families,
As I walk through our lively Virginia Tech campus, witnessing the vibrant hues of autumn and the energy of our students, I cannot help but wear my parent hat again alongside my Dean’s. The resonance of laughter, the determination in the library, and the vibrant sounds on the Drillfield from the Marching Virginians remind me so much of the daily tales we share at the dinner table about challenges, opportunities, and growth.
It is amazing watching our students transform, find their footing, and create their paths. I see it every day – our students facing challenges with a sparkle in their eyes, learning life lessons, and embracing the Hokie spirit of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Just the other day, I encountered a group of students meticulously working on a community project. Their fervor and unity struck a chord with me. It reminded me of the dinner table conversations about teamwork and the importance of giving back, values we instill as parents and which Virginia Tech fervently upholds.
As I bike in front of Squires Student Center and visit the Bubble on top of the hill, the diversity of passions is palpable. Some students are immersed in art, others engaged in lively sports, while some are debating in clubs. It is a canvas of growth and exploration, a testament to the multitude of opportunities that enable our students to find their passions and build enduring friendships.
We must also remember your support and pride are the cornerstones of their journey. I have seen the joy in your eyes during Family Weekend, shared stories of pride, and felt the collective heartbeat of the Hokie family, especially after my own family was here and jumped with joy during "Enter Sandman" in Lane Stadium. Our shared experiences, joys, and sometimes anxieties create a community for all. My youngest child, a senior in high school, recently visited and may consider applying to Virginia Tech even when her dad is the Dean! I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
Looking ahead, I see our students gearing up for career fairs and networking, stepping into the world with the confidence and skills nurtured at Virginia Tech. It is a proud moment for us, witnessing them transition from our guiding hands to becoming the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. Together, we are witnessing a beautiful journey – our students’ growth, their successes, and the forging of their futures. Thank you for entrusting Virginia Tech with these precious stories and for being an integral part of our communal narrative.
Warmly,
Mark Sikes, Ph.D.

The Dean of Students Office knows Virginia Tech. Encourage your student to get to know this caring and talented team of mentors and advocates! They can point your student in the right direction, be a sounding board, and assist with personal, social, and academic challenges. They want to get to know your student so they can walk with them along the way and cheer them on in true Hokie fashion!
