Navigating the transition to off-campus housing
October tips for parents and families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students
At Virginia Tech, we believe in preparing our Hokies for steps in their university journey — including the transition from on-campus living to finding their own space in the Blacksburg community. For many first-year students and their families, this can feel like a major milestone. As your student begins exploring off-campus housing options, it is important to remember this is just the beginning of an exciting and manageable process.
Off-Campus Housing Fair: A great first step
The journey often starts at the Fall Off-Campus Housing Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, October 30, in the Squires Student Center Commonwealth Ballroom. This event gives students a chance to explore rental options in the Blacksburg area and speak face-to-face with local housing partners about pricing, amenities, and availability. It is a perfect opportunity to get the lay of the land and begin understanding the housing landscape here in Blacksburg.
During the fair, students can also learn about roommate matching opportunities and different living environments that fit their needs. From large apartment complexes with bus routes to cozy houses within walking distance, there’s a broad range of options to explore.
Start early, but do not panic
We know that for families, the idea of finding off-campus housing can feel overwhelming, especially if this is your first experience with the process. At Virginia Tech, we encourage students to start the conversation early, but also emphasize that this is just the first step in a longer journey. Many housing options will remain available well into the spring semester, so there is no need to rush into a decision.
A Hokie’s best friend: resources & support
We offer plenty of resources to help guide both students and families through this process. Virginia Tech’s Off-Campus Housing Services is a fantastic resource, with tools for exploring available properties, connecting with potential roommates, and understanding rental agreements. I highly recommend visiting offcampus.vt.edu for all the details. You will find:
- Housing search engines that list up-to-date rental properties in Blacksburg.
- Roommate matching services for students looking to share housing.
- Lease education to help students understand the legal aspects of renting.
What families should know
This process is a new learning experience for both students and parents, and we are here to support you along the way. Encourage your student to take ownership of the housing search while also knowing that there is time to make informed decisions. The right fit will come, and this process helps Hokies grow into more independent, responsible young adults.
Remind them that living off campus comes with new responsibilities, and it is also a chance to experience the larger Blacksburg community — a community that embodies the Hokie Spirit. As the fall semester moves into October, this is an exciting phase for first-year students who are ready to explore the next step of living in Blacksburg. The Fall Off-Campus Housing Fair is a wonderful starting point, and we encourage students to take their time, ask questions, and involve their families in the decision-making process. Together, let us ensure that the Hokie experience extends beyond campus, preparing students for what is next with confidence and support. Go Hokies!
