Navigating April - A guide for families

April tips for families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

April in Virginia Tech presents opportunities and challenges for our Hokies. It is a time when the academic year is reaching its crescendo, with final projects, exams, and, for some, graduation on the horizon. My hope is the following will provide insights and advice on supporting your student during this pivotal month, in tune with the spirit and values that define our community.

Embrace Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) as a Family

  • Ut Prosim is not just a motto but a way of life at Virginia Tech. Encourage your student to live this ethos both academically and personally. Whether it’s participating in The Big Event, the largest student-run service project, or supporting their peers in their academic and extracurricular endeavors, serving others is a Hokie hallmark. Discuss with your student how they can contribute to their community in Blacksburg and beyond.

Encourage Balance During the Final Push

  • The end of the semester can be a stressful time for students. Encouraging a balance between studying and personal well-being is crucial. Remind your Hokie to take advantage of the university’s resources, such as the Cook Counseling Center and academic advising. Also, the Hokie Wellness program offers various services to support physical and mental health. Suggest taking breaks to enjoy the beauty of the Drillfield in spring or a walk through the Hahn Horticulture Garden to recharge.

Prepare for Transition and Change

  • April is a time of transition, especially for seniors preparing to graduate. Discuss plans for post-graduation, but also focus on cherishing the remaining time at Virginia Tech. For underclassmen, this may be a time of excitement to move back home for the summer or consider academic pursuits or internships. Support them if they need to seek advice from academic advisors or with the Career and Professional Development office to explore summer internships or research opportunities.

Stay Connected to the Hokie Community

  • Staying engaged with the Virginia Tech community is more important than ever. Whether through attending spring sports events to cheer on the Hokies or participating in university traditions, these experiences enrich the college journey. Encourage your student to stay informed. As parents, you can connect with our many resources to stay involved and informed.

Support During Exam Preparation

  • As finals approach, students often feel the pressure of academic achievement. Encourage your student to create a study schedule and find productive study spaces, whether it’s in Newman Library or a favorite coffee shop in downtown Blacksburg. Remind them of the importance of sleep and proper nutrition during this time. Sending a care package or a simple encouraging message can be a great morale booster.

Celebrate Achievements and Look Forward

  • April is also a time to celebrate. Recognize and celebrate the achievements of your student over the past year. For graduating seniors, commencement is a momentous occasion that marks the beginning of a new chapter. Discuss plans to celebrate this milestone, respecting the traditions and the spirit of the occasion as guided by Virginia Tech.

As this academic year draws to a close, we reflect on the resilience, dedication, and Hokie spirit our students have demonstrated. Your support as parents and family members is invaluable in this journey. Let us together encourage our students to finish strong, embody the values of Ut Prosim, and prepare for the exciting next steps in their lives.

Thank you for being an integral part of our Hokie family. Let’s make this April a memorable one for our students, full of growth, achievement, and Hokie pride.
