A year of growth, resilience, and community

May tips for parents and families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

As we bring the academic year to a close, I want to take a moment to pause. As Dean of Students and as a member of the Hokie community, I am deeply grateful for the journey we have shared together.

Each month throughout this year, I have had the privilege of connecting with you through this newsletter, sharing updates, offering insights, and highlighting the many ways our students are learning, growing, and thriving here at Virginia Tech. But this month, I want to speak from the heart.

This year has been full of milestones, both big and small. We welcomed thousands of new students into our community, watched them find their footing, and cheered them on as they stretched their reach in classrooms, residence halls, research labs, leadership roles, and service projects. We have navigated moments of uncertainty and celebration, challenge and triumph. And at every step, I have been reminded of just how strong and resilient Hokies truly are.

You, our families, continue to serve as steady partners in this journey. Whether you sent your first student off to college or are preparing for your last Hokie to cross the stage at commencement, thank you. Your encouragement, love, and belief in your students have made a real difference.

This university is grounded in a powerful set of Aspirations for Student Learning: to commit to unwavering curiosity, pursue self-understanding and integrity, practice civility, prepare for a life of courageous leadership, and above all, to embrace Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) as a way of life. I have seen those aspirations come to life in your students this year. They show up for each other. They ask thoughtful questions. They lean into leadership. They care deeply. That is what makes our community so special.

As we look ahead to summer and prepare for all that is next, know that the Dean of Students team is still here supporting students, answering questions, and planning for another incredible year. And to those of you whose students are graduating this month: congratulations. What an honor it has been to walk alongside them during this chapter.

From one Hokie to another, thank you for being part of our community. I hope this summer brings rest, reflection, and pride in all that you and your student have accomplished this year.

With gratitude,

Mark Sikes, Ph.D.

The Dean of Students Office knows Virginia Tech. Encourage your student to get to know this caring and talented team of mentors and advocates! They can point your student in the right direction, be a sounding board, and assist with personal, social, and academic challenges. They want to get to know your student so they can walk with them along the way and cheer them on in true Hokie fashion!
