A message from the Director for Residential Well-being

Dear Hokie Families,

We are excited to meet your student when they arrive on campus later this month. Residential Well-being (RWB) staff will be here to welcome your student and you as soon as you arrive at the residence hall for check-in.

Earlier today, we sent your student an email about our Residential Well-being resources and our opening meetings with them. All residents are expected to attend the following meetings in their community, so please reinforce these essential meetings and plan for your student to attend. Locations will be shared upon check-in.

Day 1

6:30-8 p.m. - RWB Community Orientation Night 1

  • Students will meet and learn about their Student Leaders, fellow community members, and the professional staff on campus that are here to help them.
  • We’ll cover:
    • Residence hall rules and expectations
    • Ways to communicate with the community
    • University wide Principles of Community
    • Answers to their questions

Day 2

5-6:30 p.m. - RWB Community Orientation Night 2

  • Students will work together with their community members to create their own Principles of Community. Student Leaders will facilitate these conversations to encourage open dialogue.
  • We’ll cover:
    • Collective community wants, needs and expectations

We’re ready to meet your student!

Residential Well-being is a unique model designed to support today’s college students. Each community (or “District”) is served by professional staff that are available to support its students, including a:

  • Managing Director for Residential Well-being & Inclusion
  • Coordinator for Case Management
  • Coordinator for Well-being
  • Coordinator for Experience VT
  • Embedded Counselors who serve the residential campus

Another difference in our model is that each student has a team of Student Leaders assigned to them. Student Leaders are our version of the role we used to call Resident Assistant. Residents will have at least one Student Leader for Inclusion & Belonging, a Student Leader for ExperienceVT, and a Student Leader for Well-being. They will receive communication from their team of Student Leaders as they arrive.

Contact information and more on your students’ District number can be found on the Residential Well-being website.

This is an enormous, exciting, and sometimes scary transition for you and your student. If you are interested in learning more about our Residential Well-being model and tips for the transition, join us for a brief webinar with the Director for Residential Well-being and our lead partner from Cook Counseling Center on Wednesday night, August 9 at 6 p.m. on the VT Residential Facebook page. We’ll post the recording afterward for those who can’t make it.

We look forward to a terrific start to the year.

Go Hokies!
