Thanksgiving Break

November tips for families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

Dear Families,

November has arrived, and it's a time of appreciation and celebration as we approach Thanksgiving. This month brings a unique blend of experiences for our students, both on- and off-campus.

As we prepare for the Thanksgiving break, I want to emphasize the importance of this time for your students. For those returning home, it's an opportunity to reconnect with family, share stories of their college journey, and savor the warmth of home-cooked meals. It's a moment to express gratitude for the support and love that has brought them this far.

For those students staying in the Blacksburg area during Thanksgiving break, there's no shortage of activities and opportunities. Our community comes alive with events and gatherings that offer a unique and memorable holiday experience. Whether it's volunteering to help those in need, participating in local festivities, or simply taking some well-deserved downtime, there's something for everyone.

Blacksburg has a special charm during this season. The crisp autumn air, the vibrant colors of the leaves (especially the maroon and burnt orange ones), and the sense of community make it a wonderful place to be. Encourage your students to explore the beauty of our town, connect with fellow students who are also staying, and make their own Thanksgiving traditions.

This month, I invite you to remind your students of the importance of family, whether biological or chosen, and the value of community. It's a time for them to contemplate the journey they've undertaken and the support system that surrounds them.

As we journey through November together, let's celebrate the spirit of togetherness, gratitude, and exploration. It's a time to inspire, connect, and appreciate the experiences that shape your students' lives here at Virginia Tech.

With warm regards,
