Zenobia Lawrence Hikes Campus Community Award

The Zenobia Lawrence Hikes Campus Community Award is presented to the Student Affairs employee or group of employees that promotes the development of community. This award relates to the division’s strategic goal of Fostering Globalization and Inclusive Excellence. Some criteria include building inclusive, supportive, caring, just, and diverse communities, either locally or at a global level, values and celebrates diversity, and demonstrates respect and compassion for others.
This year’s recipient, Chandler Crean, truly embodies the spirit of this award through unwavering commitment to fostering community, enhancing the student experience, and demonstrating profound care and respect for every individual served. As advisor to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) of Virginia Tech, his support goes far beyond formal responsibilities—it is transformational, with community always at the center.
Students describe him as genuine, encouraging, and insightful. One student leader shared, “He provides resources, insight, and encouragement. He is so genuine!” Another reflected, “Despite not being a member of a Black Greek-letter organization or identifying as Black, he has become an integral part of the NPHC and Black community. He approaches his role with humility and openness, free of preconceived notions.” Under his guidance, NPHC has flourished, now welcoming eight of the Divine Nine organizations back to campus, with even more growth on the horizon.
What sets him apart is his ability to build authentic relationships. He is generous, patient, and deeply personable—knowing students by name, understanding their goals, and recognizing their unique identities. Even when challenges arise, he responds with persistence and compassion, always uplifting and empowering those around him. He “shows up” in every sense of the phrase.
His leadership is rooted in respect and authenticity. Students and colleagues alike seek him out, knowing they will be seen, heard, and valued. His energy is unwavering, and his dedication is evident in every interaction. He is passionate about creating a thriving, united community and works tirelessly to make that vision a reality.
Beyond campus, he sustains a vast network, volunteering for his alma mater, national fraternity, and professional organizations. He connects students across councils, generations, and campuses, helping them imagine new possibilities and build lasting networks of their own. He is an outstanding colleague throughout Student Affairs, leading initiatives, serving on committees, and always ready to lend a hand.
His impact extends to the systems he builds—helping chapters develop sustainable structures, utilize technology, and improve communication. His work with student interns fosters a positive, supportive culture, modeling professionalism and innovation.
Chandler Crean truly embodies the culture we strive to create at Virginia Tech: one of inclusion, support, and excellence. He shows up, he listens, and he leads with heart.
