Spring break adventures: A Hokie journey of safety and discovery
March tips for parents and families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students
Dear Hokie Families,
As the campus begins to stir with the anticipation of spring break, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant energy that defines our Hokie Nation. I remember a conversation I had with students just last week about a spirited young Hokie planning a road trip with a few close friends. They were excitedly mapping out their journey, discussing the scenic routes and local eateries they would visit along the way. This conversation reminded me of the balance we all strive for, which is the pursuit of adventure tempered with the importance of safety and care.
Spring break at Virginia Tech is not just a pause in our academic schedule, it is an opportunity for students to explore new horizons, reconnect with family, or even rediscover their own hometown treasures. As families, you share in that excitement. I know many of you eagerly await updates and stories of your student’s adventures. And while those stories are filled with the promise of fun and discovery, they also come with a call to vigilance.
I always encourage students to plan ahead and communicate with their families. Whether it is confirming travel itineraries or ensuring that every device is charged and every emergency contact is saved, a little preparation goes a long way. I recall advising one student to always share their route with someone back on campus, a simple step that brings immense peace of mind to both the traveler and their loved ones. There is a certain Hokie pride in that responsibility which is a testament to our commitment to look out for one another.
Traveling, as we all know, has its challenges. I have often stressed the importance of safety on the road, from buckling up and obeying traffic laws to being mindful of personal security in unfamiliar areas. These practical tips, though seemingly routine, are the threads that weave together a secure and memorable journey. As our students venture out, I urge them to trust their instincts, stick to well-lit and populated paths, and never hesitate to seek help if something feels amiss.
In our ever-changing world, health and well-being is another cornerstone of a successful break. Encouraging habits like frequent hand washing and staying hydrated is part of ensuring that every Hokie not only enjoys their time off but returns refreshed and ready for the challenges for the remainder of the semester. There is a comforting sense of continuity in knowing that our values that define the Hokie Spirit extend far beyond the classroom.
I want you, our cherished Hokie families, to know that your role in this journey is invaluable. Your support, your reminders, and your care fortify the resilience and community spirit that is the hallmark of Virginia Tech. As you encourage your student to seize the adventure, please also remind them of the importance of looking out for their well-being.
As spring break unfolds, let us all embrace the opportunities to explore, to rest, and to reconnect. Whether it is a local excursion or a journey to a far-off destination, let the Hokie Spirit guide every decision. After all, while our paths may diverge for a short while, the bonds we share as Hokies remain strong, constant, and ever-true.
Here’s to a spring break filled with safety, discovery, and the unyielding pride of being a Hokie.
Warmly,
Mark Sikes, Ph.D.
