Hokie Check-ins and Chats
A letter from Dean of Students Meaghan Davidson
Hi Hokies!
As we approach Thanksgiving break, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for you — our Hokie families, our students, and our faculty and staff who contribute to the vibrant culture across our Virginia Tech community! You and your student are the reason my staff and I get to do what we love every day, and I hope you will take a moment to acknowledge all that you've done thus far to prepare your student for success.
Every question that you've answered, the milestones you've supported, and all the obstacles you've helped your Hokie navigate have led them to where they are today. Know that your guidance has successfully supported your Hokie, and that your student is not alone — we're here to help them navigate this journey.
Academic Support
By now, students have completed their midterm exams and will soon begin preparation for final projects and end-of-semester testing. Encourage your student to seek resources that refine their skills, expand their knowledge, and boost their confidence as they study.
- The Student Success Center offers tutoring, academic coaching, peer education, and more.
- The Writing Center can assist with any writing project from any university course.
- Encourage your student to connect with their academic advisor periodically. Advisors can guide students through questions regarding their courses or program requirements.
- Explore our list of campus resources, including transitional advising for students considering a new major or program.
Career and Professional Development
Depending on where your student is on their college journey, they may be interested in an internship or are preparing to enter the workforce. For families of newer Hokies, I encourage you to chat with your students to discuss work or development options that best suit their needs, and how these opportunities might fit into their schedule. Some resources require log-in as a student.
- Career and Professional Development is a great starting resource. They offer career coaching, professional portraits, workshops, career fairs, and more.
- Your student can book an appointment with Career Coaching and Advising to review your resume and cover letter, review interview basics, and practice answering questions.
- Did you know there are opportunities to find internship experiences through Handshake? Your student can log in through this link with their Virginia Tech information and find internships, many of which are available through Virginia Tech and the surrounding community!
I hope you will find time over break to check in with your student about their current academic and career plans. As always, The Dean of Students Office is here to support your student every step of the way. I invite you to explore the resources in our office.
From all of us in Student Affairs, we wish you a restful and joyous break!

They want to get to know your student so they can walk with them along the way and cheer them on in true Hokie fashion!
