Jason Ratcliff

The Staff Excellence Award is presented to the Student Affairs employee or group of employees who provide excellence in operational performance and service, consistently achieve quality service, enhance the work of others through exceptional performance and efficiencies, and impact the overall operations and/or infrastructure of the University.

This year’s recipient is someone who exemplifies the values of service, excellence, dedication, and student development through his work and leadership every day.

Jason Ratcliff is the Golf Course Superintendent for Virginia Tech Recreational Sports.

Anyone who has played golf on the university’s course knows that it is exceptional. Golfers frequently compliment the outstanding condition of the course, particularly the greens.

Those compliments are a direct reflection of Jason's commitment to excellence and his unwavering attention to detail. His expertise in golf course management and turfgrass maintenance have been honed over more than three decades of service to Virginia Tech. They are evident in every aspect of the course, from the playing conditions to the strategic planning required to maintain a high-quality facility with limited resources.

This level of excellence is especially impressive given the fact that Jason is the sole full-time employee responsible for maintaining the entire golf course. The quality of the experience he delivers to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members is remarkable. His work ethic, passion for the profession, and commitment to providing an exceptional golf experience are second to none.

This year, due to the university's need for additional residence halls, portions of the golf course became an active construction site. With only a few months' notice, Jason was tasked with leading the construction of a new green and tee box. He partnered with Turfgrass Management students to transform the project into a valuable educational experience that equipped them with valuable skills and insights.

Jason accomplished all of this while preparing for the demolition of the maintenance facilities that had served as his workspace for 31 years. He also reconfigured portions of the irrigation system, oversaw the course modifications required to accommodate construction, and ensured the golf course remained operational and enjoyable for users throughout the transition.

Jason approached every challenge with professionalism, positivity, and grace. Throughout the process, he focused on solutions rather than obstacles and maintained a quality experience for golfers.

Jason is a quiet leader whose influence is felt far beyond what is immediately visible. He leads through action, consistency, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. He serves as a role model for everyone who has the opportunity to work alongside him, demonstrating what it means to be dedicated to one's craft, supportive of students, and committed to the mission of the university.
