Frequently Asked Questions

duckpond at dawn

Is Orientation required?

  • Orientation is highly recommended and you will be unable to get your class schedule unless you attend Orientation. If you cannot attend during the sessions in June and July, you will need to attend the make-up Orientation session the week before school starts.

Should family members attend?

  • Absolutely! Though attendance is not required, it is recommended. At Family Orientation, you will learn about resources, programs, and policies that can help your student throughout their undergraduate years. You will also learn what to expect during your student's first year at Virginia Tech, have the opportunity to talk with current Virginia Tech undergraduate students about their experiences, and meet other family members sending their students to Virginia Tech. There is a fee of $35 per person for family members to attend Orientation.

Why is it so important that I attend Orientation?

  • You will meet new VT students, be mentored by an Orientation team member, discover Hokie traditions, interact with faculty and staff, and learn about involvement opportunities beyond the classroom.
  • You will get a feel for what it is like to live in a residence hall room (First-Year Orientation only), and receive answers to any questions you may have.
  • The program will welcome and introduce you to the campus community.
  • You will meet with academic representatives from your major and complete your Fall 2020 course schedule.

Am I expected to attend both days of Orientation?

  • Yes. If you are first-year student, you are expected to attend both days of Orientation. Day 2 is when you will meet with someone about your class schedule for Fall 2020.

Signing Up for Orientation

How do I sign-up for Orientation?

  • You will receive an e-mail (at your VT email address) from Orientation@vt.edu with a link that will take you directly to the registration page.

How do I pay for Orientation?

  • Your matriculation fee (which is part of the deposit you paid to VT) covers Orientation costs (whether you attend or not). The following are included during Orientation: your meals (lunch and dinner Day One and breakfast on Day Two) and on-campus lodging (the night of your session) for students only. There is a fee of $35 per person for family members to attend Orientation, payable when you register for Orientation.

Picking a Date

  • Once the registration system opens, you will receive an email (in your VT email) that has a link to sign up for Orientation. The dates listed are for your major. They are on a first-come, first-served basis and once the session has reached capacity, it will be closed. We do not maintain waiting lists.
  • Your session date is not confirmed until you complete the online registration, make any payments for your guests, and reach the page that gives you the option to print a receipt. You should also receive a confirmation e-mail to your VT email.

Something has come up and I can’t come on the date I chose. What do I do?

  • Click on the link you received in your original email from Orientation@vt.edu about Orientation sign-up. It will show you the dates that are currently available.

What if I need to add a guest after registering?

  • Log back into the link you received from Orientation@vt.edu and make any needed changes. For urgent needs, we do registration on-site during the sessions, though this is less efficient than registering before you arrive.

What if I need to remove a guest after registering?

  • The process for removing a guest is the same as adding one. Log back into the link you received from Orientation@vt.edu and make your changes. Please note, if you remove a guest that you have paid for, you will not receive a refund.

Is there a wait list for Orientation?

  • There is no wait list for Orientation. When changing your date, please select a date with an open spot. Dates are available on a first-come, first-served basis due to program and residence hall space limitations. Because much of the Orientation experience is personalized, we cannot accommodate students coming on the wrong date.

Where can I find a confirmation of my Orientation session?

  • You can log back into the link you received from Orientation@vt.edu and see the information there.
  • Students should have also received a confirmation in their VT email.
