April community connections and campus involvement

April tips for parents and families from Dean of Students Meaghan Davidson

Dear Virginia Tech parents and families,

As we move through the month of April, I am often reminded of our motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). This month provides many opportunities for campus connections, community engagement, reflection, and healing. It’s also time to check in academically with your student to make sure that they’re on track for graduation and aligning with their professional goals.

Campus Involvement

Spring Family Weekend takes place April 17-19. This is an opportunity for students and families to spend time together exploring Virginia Tech and our surrounding Blacksburg community; we hope to see you, your student, and your family at these events:

  • The 3.2 for 32 Run in Remembrance will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Join the Hokie community on this day of remembrance, as we come together to reflect and honor the 32 students and faculty we lost in 2007. Beginning at 9 a.m. with a moment of silence, the community is invited to walk, jog, or run on a scenic route along campus landmarks. Participants move together in unity and reflection and complete the course near the April 16 memorial outside Burruss Hall. Following the run, a remembrance service will be held in the War Memorial Chapel at 1:30 p.m.
  • The Spring Game will take place on Saturday, April 18, at 3 p.m. at Lane Stadium. View the full Spring Family Weekend schedule to plan ahead.

The Big Event, a student-run day of service, is the second largest event of its kind in the nation. Hundreds of students will gather on April 11 to complete volunteer projects across the New River Valley, embracing the Hokie Spirit of service. Giving back to the community provides a way for Hokies to foster connection, purpose, and belonging and to build self-esteem. Students can register to participate in this tradition by April 8. Your student can sign up as an individual or as a member of a student group.

Academic Check-In

It is recommended that students who expect to graduate in May check in with their academic advisors and professors in April to ensure courses and graduation requirements are met by the deadlines. Be sure to follow up on graduation application statuses, as well as important dates.

Students who are not graduating and are continuing school in the summer and fall may consider internships or professional development opportunities. Virginia Tech’s Career and Professional Development offers guidance on seeking employment and other experiential learning opportunities.

I invite you to discuss participation in these events with your student.

As we wrap up the academic year, your continued support plays an important role in your student’s success. Encouraging their academic progress, helping them connect with campus resources when challenges arise, and supporting their well-being can make a meaningful difference. Additionally, motivating your student to engage in campus traditions, student organizations, and university events can help foster a sense of belonging and connection. Together, these efforts contribute positively to their overall experience and success as a Hokie.
