Jim ’73 and Liz Mossberg Table Tennis Scholarship

Funded by Virginia Tech, the Jim ’73 and Liz Mossberg Table Tennis Scholarship was established by Jim Mossberg ’73, an avid table tennis player and founder of the Table Tennis Club at Virginia Tech. This apply-to scholarship will support incoming freshmen Virginia Tech students who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must be an active USA Table Tennis (USATT) member as of the application date and during the academic year.
  • Incoming freshmen for the current academic year must agree to actively participate in the Virginia Tech Table Tennis club and be a member of the Virginia Tech Table Tennis team. Renewing recipients must continue to be active participants in the Virginia Tech Table Tennis Club and be a member of a Virginia Tech Table Tennis team.
  • Virginia Tech Table Tennis club participation and club team membership will be evaluated for the coming semester based on the previous semester except for the first semester freshman year. Majority vote of the club officers will certify club participation.
  • Must play in a USATT-sanctioned tournament in the year prior to March 1 of the application year (for example, must play in a USATT-sanctioned tournament anytime between March 1, 2025, to March 1, 2026, for the 2026/27 academic year).
  • Students must have a USATT rating of at least 2000 as of March 15 in the year that the academic year starts. See example in previous bullet point.
  • The recipients must pursue one of the following majors (or similar or subsequent majors): Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Building Construction, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Engineering and Management, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Computational Modeling & Data Analytics, Mathematics, Physics or Statistics.
  • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
