Embracing transitions - A farewell to the academic year with Hokie pride

May tips for families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

As May unfolds its vibrant hues across our cherished campus, signaling the culmination of another extraordinary academic year, I find myself reflecting on the journey we have shared. The 2023-24 academic year was a tapestry of challenges met, achievements celebrated, and countless moments of growth and discovery. I am filled with pride and gratitude for the resilience, dedication, and Hokie Spirit that defined our community through the seasons.

This month, as our graduates stand on the cusp of new beginnings, their achievements illuminate the power of our collective commitment to learning, service, and excellence. Their journey — from the first uncertain steps on campus to confident strides across the commencement stage — is a testament to the supportive, nurturing environment that is the hallmark of our Virginia Tech family.

To our families, whose unwavering support and encouragement were crucial to the success of our students, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your belief in the values we uphold and your commitment to the well-being of our community enrich our collective Hokie Spirit profoundly.

As we bid farewell to our graduates, we do so with the confidence that they are well-prepared to make meaningful contributions to the world. Emboldened by a Virginia Tech education and grounded in the principles of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), they are ready to embark on new journeys, tackle complex challenges, and lead with integrity and compassion.

This moment of transition is also a time of reflection for us all. It is an opportunity to consider the impact of our shared experiences and the lessons we carry forward. Inspired by the poignant words of Mary Oliver, we might ask ourselves, "What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" As Hokies, our answer lies in our unwavering commitment to make a positive impact, to seek out new challenges, and to continue growing in knowledge and spirit.

As the academic year ends, let us celebrate our achievements, honor the journeys of our graduates, and look forward to the endless possibilities that lie ahead. May this be a time of joy, reflection, and renewal for each member of our Hokie family.

Together, as one Hokie family, we continue to strive for excellence, to support and uplift one another, and to build a legacy of which we can all be proud. Here's to a wonderful conclusion to the academic year and to the exciting adventures that await us.

With warmest regards and Hokie pride,
