Welcome to the Hokie community!

September tips for parents and families from Mark Sikes, Dean of Students

As we begin another exciting academic year, I want to take a moment to connect with you and share some thoughts that may guide your student’s journey this year. Whether you are a seasoned Hokie parent or joining us for the first time, this message is designed to offer insights and support as your student navigates their path at Virginia Tech.

Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars: A Key to Success

One of the most important lessons your student will learn at Virginia Tech is how to balance their academic responsibilities with the myriad of extracurricular opportunities available. From student organizations and clubs to sports and volunteer programs, the options are endless. While these activities are a vital part of the college experience, it is crucial that your student maintains a healthy balance between their studies and their involvement outside the classroom.

We often talk about the importance of involvement, but I want to emphasize the notion of depth over breadth. Instead of spreading themselves too thin by participating in many programs or opportunities, encourage your student to engage deeply in a few activities that resonate with them. This approach fosters stronger connections and a greater sense of fulfillment and allows them to excel in the areas they are most passionate. Quality over quantity is a valuable lesson that will serve them well throughout their college years and beyond.

Finding Your "Why": Exploring Identity and Purpose

College is a time of exploration and self-discovery. At Virginia Tech, we encourage students to take the time to find their "why" — to reflect on what drives them, what they believe in, and what they hope to achieve. This process is deeply personal and often involves exploring their identity, values, and aspirations.

It is important for your student(s) to understand that finding balance is not just about managing time; it is also about staying true to themselves. This means respecting their own culture, beliefs, and boundaries while being open to new experiences and perspectives. College is a unique opportunity to grow, but growth does not mean abandoning who they are — it means expanding their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Encourage your student(s) to take advantage of the resources available to them at Virginia Tech, such as the newly renovated Recreational Sports complex - War Memorial Hall, Cook Counseling Center, The Student Success Center, and/or one of the many Cultural and Community Centers available. These resources can help them navigate their journey and find a balance that aligns with their goals and values.

Supporting Your Student’s Journey

As parents and family members, your support is invaluable to your student’s success. Encourage them to begin a journey of ownership of their college experience, to seek help when needed, and to make decisions that reflect their true selves. Be a sounding board for their ideas and challenges. My personal recommendation is to “fight the urge to fix” all their issues. Grant them the grace to learn and grow as they navigate their independence.

Remember, the journey through university is as much about the experiences along the way as it is about the destination. By focusing on depth over breadth and helping your student find their "why," you are setting them up for a fulfilling and meaningful Virginia Tech experience.

Thank you for being an essential part of the Virginia Tech family. We look forward to partnering with you to support your students’ success and well-being.
